Central Highlands of Vietnam vs. Georgia: How Similar Are the Growing Climates?

Southern Fruit Grower is rooted in two places: family farms in Cư M'gar, Đắk Lắk province, in Vietnam's Central Highlands, and gardens across Georgia and the US Southeast. Both are warm and humid in summer, and it's tempting to assume what grows in one will grow in the other. Some of it does. A lot of it doesn't. Here is an honest comparison.

The numbers side by side

Monthly averages for 2001–2020 from the ERA5 reanalysis (via the Open-Meteo historical weather API), for grid points near Buôn Ma Thuột, the capital of Đắk Lắk, and Atlanta. Reanalysis values are modeled estimates for a grid area, so local weather station records can differ, especially for rainfall.

Latitude about 12.7° N about 33.7° N
Elevation (grid) about 490 m (1,600 ft) about 320 m (1,050 ft)
Coldest month, avg high / low Dec: 79°F / 66°F Jan: 51°F / 34°F
Warmest month, avg high / low Apr: 92°F / 72°F Jul–Aug: 87°F / 71°F

Rainfall pattern Very dry Dec–Mar (under 1 in/month), wet May–Oct (5–9 in/month) Spread through the year, roughly 3–5 in every month

What's genuinely similar

What's very different

What this means for a Georgia grower

  1. Grow tropical favorites in containers. Tropical passion fruit can live in a large pot outdoors in summer and come inside before frost. See our passion fruit guide.
  2. Use native and temperate relatives in the ground. Maypop, pawpaw, persimmon and muscadine are adapted to Southeastern winters. See 7 native fruits for Atlanta.
  3. Borrow the techniques, not the plant list. Strong trellises for vines, mulching, and close attention to soil and water carry over well. Frost-tender crops don't.
  4. Check your exact zone. Look up your ZIP code on the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map before buying any plant labeled "tropical."
